Think of is like you have so many options, the perfect board is out there for your style of riding. Whether you are buying or building your skateboard you should know what you are getting into. Knowledge is power. Let’s give you some skateboarding power!
SKATEBOARD SIZING FOR YOU
The wheelbase of a skateboard is the measured by the distance between the sets of truck mounting holes drilled into the skate deck. It is between 13" to 15", with the distance dictated both by the skaters height and personal needs. Taller skaters are more comfortable with a wider wheelbase on the skateboard.
The skateboard nose is the front of your skate deck. This may be a little thicker and longer than the tail of your skateboard.
The skateboard tail is the rear of your deck and tis a little thinner/shorter than the skateboard nose.
The shape of your skateboard deck that somewhat resembles a potato chip and makes the surface concave. The outside of the board between the nose and tail curve upwards.
SKATEBOARD DECK LENGTH
The skate deck length is measured from the nose to the tail and is usually between 28" and 32". (This does not include longboards. Longboards are…...longer.) Shorter skateboards are more narrow, and longer boards are wider. Simple right? The size is typically based on the scale. Like doing tricks? Get a smaller skateboard. Want to go cruising, or just need more stability? Let a longer skateboard.
SKATEBOARD DECK WIDTH
Most skateboard decks are between 7.5” and 8.75”. What the heck does that mean? Who makes these rules? Who? You! You make the rules on what will work best for you. If you are a vert skater then a wider skateboard is for you. Same goes for larger skaters, who need more toe room and a larger skate deck area to handle the higher center of gravity they have. Skinny/Narrow skateboards are better for skate tricks.
Almost all skateboards are made using laminated sheets of hard North American Maple wood. This veneer is a durable and semi - flexible wood. For the most part skateboard decks are formed using a 7-ply construction, where the seven veneers are layered. Depending on the manufacturer, you may see more or less layers.
